ProFuturo and the Organization of American States (OAS) have signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education of Guyana to implement an education programme, which will benefit over 5,000 boys and girls from vulnerable environments in that country. The signing of this agreement represents the official launch of the project in the Caribbean, which will contribute to ensuring that over 23,000 boys and girls from the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Guyana, and Jamaica will have access to ProFuturo’s digital education programme.
In Guyana, 449 teachers from 28 schools will receive training on the use of technologies and on incorporating innovative methodologies in their primary school classrooms. Consequently, over 5,000 students in the country will have access to digital content and interactive materials for improving their learning experiences.
The signing of this agreement, which took place in Washington D.C. on 24 May, confirms the importance of public-private alliances for the development of countries in the region. The event included the presence of the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro; the Minister of Education of Guayana, Nicolette Henry; and the General Manager of ProFuturo, Sofía Fernández de Mesa.
Guyana thus joins 28 countries of Latin America, Africa, and Asia where ProFuturo is already developing its digital education programme.
ICT Alliance
The implementation of the ProFuturo Programme responds to the 2030 ICT Alliance signed in the Dominican Republic in 2016. This alliance, led by the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL), seeks to connect 1.5 billion people globally by 2020; to connect all public schools to the Internet by 2030; to promote digital training, thereby developing talent for the digital economy; and to strengthen democratic participation through new media.
ProFuturo’s education programme is a commitment to strengthening abilities in vulnerable environments; to generating social, cultural, and economic development for citizens of the Caribbean according to the three cornerstones of the Inter-American Education Agenda (quality, inclusive, and equitable education); to strengthening the teaching profession; and to comprehensive care for early childhood.
