ProFuturo, the educational innovation programme using technology from Fundación Telefónica, “la Caixa” Foundation and the Organisation of American States (OAS) launch the second edition of ‘Mapping the Best Practices in Digital Education in the Americas’. This initiative, whose objective is to seek out and share the most successful initiation in digital education across the region, aims to foster collaboration and learning among educational institutions, teachers and students.
Participation is open to all educational institutions in the Americas in this second edition, which runs until 14 November 2024. In addition, participating institutions can submit more than one best practice, provided it has been developed by different teachers, directors or representatives of the organisation signing up for this edition. For further information, there will be an informative session this coming Monday, 4 November.
The mapping of best practices is a systematic process that seeks to identify, document and share successful experiences in education. This approach not only gives recognition to the highlighted initiatives, but it also provides a reference framework for continuous improvement in education. The ‘Mapping the Best Practices in Digital Education in the Americas’ is undertaken by means of the compilation of data, the evaluation of practices and dissemination of the results, fostering a culture of collaborative learning among all, where ongoing teacher training is fundamental to the success of these practices.
The first edition of the Mapping produced a detailed report which made it clear that many of the noteworthy initiatives include training for educators in the use of digital technologies, which allows teachers to more effectively integrate these tools in their classes. In short, this mapping not only serves as an information resource, but also aims to inspire other institutions to adopt and adapt these practices to improve digital education in the region.
What do we mean by Best Practices?
Best practices can be defined by a strategy, method or approach that has proven to be effective in improving teaching and learning. These practices are replicable and adaptable to different contexts, making them valuable resources for other educational institutions. Best practices must contribute to the inclusion, equality and comprehensive development of students.
In order for a given practice to be considered a best practice, it must meet certain requirements and assessment criteria, which may include: evidence of the impact; innovation; creative or new elements that give value to the educational process; sustainability; its capacity to be sustained over time and be replicable; inclusion and equality; fostering the participation of all students; and involvement of the different education and community stakeholders in the process.
Mapping of Best Practices, 1st edition
The first edition of the mapping took place in 2021 and compiled more than 200 innovative practice that have transformed teaching and learning in a wide range of contexts. The call received over 165 entries from 17 countries, the result of which produced the report: Digital Education in the Americas: Best Practices to Inspire.
This report highlights the importance of teacher training in the use of digital tools to maximise the impact on students’ learning; it also demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating technology into the teaching process, always with the aim of improving educational quality and facilitating access to digital resources.
Among the practices highlighted in the first mapping are the use of online learning platforms, the implementation of virtual classrooms, and the fostering of distance education. In addition, the importance of personalising learning is underscored, where content is adapted to the needs and pace of each student. The mapping also highlights initiatives that promote collaboration between educational institutions and their community, as well as the use of digital tools to foster creativity and critical thinking in students.
