Joaquín Rodríguez

A Lifetime Devoted to Understanding How We Learn

Long before artificial intelligence became a headline topic, Joaquín Rodríguez was asking why some people learn while others are left behind. Trained in anthropology and sociology, he began his career researching educational inequality, school dropout, and the influence of family background on learning. In the mid-1990s, he led one of Spain’s first virtual education projects, an experience that marked the beginning of a career devoted to exploring the relationship between technology and education.

Since then, he has combined research, teaching, and educational innovation, always bringing a critical perspective to the impact of technology on the way we teach and learn. Today, he is a professor and researcher at the Institute for the Future of Education (IFE Europe) at Tecnológico de Monterrey, where his work focuses on artificial intelligence, teacher education, and educational innovation.

Although his current research centers on AI, the questions that drive his work remain the same as they were at the start of his career: What does it mean to learn? How do cognitive abilities develop? And what role should schools and teachers play in a world where technology is evolving far faster than people?
