Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing education, but, like any technological advance, it must be used judiciously and responsibly. How do we ensure that AI is an ally and does not replace our creativity and student learning? Through a UNESCO guide on the use of generative AI in education and research, we have been able to draw key conclusions to integrate this powerful tool into classrooms in a balanced way.
1. Educate about data
It is essential to inform students about the data that AI collects and how it can impact their lives and learning. Knowing how technology works encourages more conscious and responsible use.
2. Intrinsic motivation
Although AI can facilitate learning, it should not replace the desire to learn. Intrinsic motivation is key for students to remain autonomous and continue to develop as individuals.
3. Cognitive and social development
The use of AI should foster students’ ability to observe, experiment and reason independently. We must not let technology limit their cognitive or social development.
4. Human interaction
Human creativity and social interaction must prevail in the educational process. AI should support teamwork, collaboration and interaction, not replace them.
5. Less pressure, more learning
AI can be used to alleviate repetitive tasks, allowing students and teachers to focus on more meaningful aspects of the educational process, without adding more pressure.
6. Listen and give feedback
It is vital to consult teachers and students on how to implement AI in the classroom, ensuring that its use is ethical and responsible.
7. Maintain human responsibility
We should never allow AI to make important decisions for us. The responsibility of education must remain in human hands, always seeking the well-being of the students.
AI as an ally of learning
The key is to maintain balance. AI is a powerful tool, but it must always be at the service of creativity, autonomy and human development.
