As part of the activities of Digital October, which advocates for a fair, sustainable and inclusive digitalisation, ProFuturo, in collaboration with the Spanish UNHCR Committee, held a one-day awareness-raising seminar on 23 October at Distrito Telefónica on their joint work in schools in refugee camps and areas in a humanitarian context in Rwanda, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania and Lebanon.
The programme focuses on strengthening primary education, fostering active student participation, improving school enrolment and retention, and promoting the use of digital tools by teachers. The intervention has expanded to several regions of Rwanda, including Mahama, Kigeme, Mugombwa, Nyabiheke, Gihembe and Kiziba. In addition, it has reached refugee camps in Nigeria, specifically in Adagon, Ukende, and the Ikyogen settlement, as well as the Chipinge region in Zimbabwe. ProFuturo continues working to implement this digital education model in new emergency contexts.
This alliance’s fundamental aim is to improve education in refugee camps, aligning itself with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4 (Quality education), SDG 10 (Reduction of inequalities) and SDG 17 (Alliances to achieve the goals). Since its inception in 2021, this collaboration has sought to enhance the quality of the education of child refugees, and of the host communities in primary schools in Rwanda.
Thanks to its specially designed programmes for humanitarian contexts, ProFuturo benefited, in 2023 alone, 27,611 children displaced from their homes, with the target of reaching 39,470 children to benefit in 2024.
