ProFuturo, the digital education program promoted by the Telefónica Foundation and the “La Caixa” Foundation joins in the celebration of Human Rights Day, celebrated every 10 December. This day, designated by the United Nations commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, a milestone that marked the universal recognition of the fundamental rights of all human beings.
Among the 30 articles proclaimed in the UDHR, number 26 focuses on education:
“Everyone has the right to an education. (…) Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms”
Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the (UDHR)
The right to education is fundamental because it acts as an enabler for the exercise of other human rights. It facilitates the development of critical thinking, provides tools for decision-making, lays the foundations for the generation of knowledge and opens doors to a world of opportunities, in line with SDG 4, which also calls for the promotion of quality education and is a goal which we actively strive towards.
However, education is not only limited to academics; it also fosters social skills, personality development, effective communication, collaboration, empathy, conflict resolution, tolerance, respect for diversity, among other skills. This is precisely what ProFuturo seeks to instil through its educational programmes for thousands of children in vulnerable and emergency contexts in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.
Digital education for ProFuturo
Based on education as a fundamental human right, at the foundation we work towards bringing it to different contexts, with the aim of attaining equal opportunities, promoting equity and reducing the educational gap in children, young people and adults. All this is done through the use of technology.
We see digital education as the tool that allows us to overcome barriers, facilitate access to education, provide flexibility in learning, foster inclusion, promote diversity and develop the skills and capacities needed to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
All the educational programmes we manage, the educational resources we publish and the innovative teaching-learning methodologies we employ seek to strengthen the integral development of our students, so that in full exercise of their fundamental right to education they can contribute to the building of a society in which they wish to live.
Education as a fundamental right transforms lives and societies, and we will continue to work towards guaranteeing the right to education for the people who need it most.
