Every May 17, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated. A date to raise awareness of the impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs), the internet and the opportunities it offers, while highlighting the importance of fighting the digital gap in an increasingly connected world.
In 2024, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has chosen to focus on “digital innovation”, highlighting its role in creating a more inclusive and sustainable future. Digital innovation in education not only improves access to information and knowledge, but also provides tools for sustainable development, especially in vulnerable environments.
Innovative technology can address the world’s most pressing challenges, from combating climate change to eradicating hunger and poverty. In vulnerable environments, digital innovation in education enables:
- Access to quality educational content, even in areas without internet access.
- Improving the quality of teaching through interactive and personalised resources.
- Development of digital skills that are essential to face the challenges of the 21st century.
- Monitoring and evaluation of educational progress to adapt teaching strategies and maximise impact.
