Shining a light on education for thousands of children in Africa

Thomas Samuel created Sunna Design in 2010 to respond to the needs of rural electrification in emerging countries. Following his engineering studies and several years of collaboration with NGOs in emerging countries, he designed an autonomous, solar-powered LED lighting system. Moon, which is the name of Thomas’ new venture, offers a self-installable kit consisting of a small solar panel (no bigger than a tablet) connected to a battery that can charge USB devices and up to five lamps. And, of course, a smartphone that allows access to all kinds of digital services, including education, through pre-installed apps with low data consumption. The project facilitates the digital, energy, and financial inclusion of millions of Africans and has won (along with the Colombian company TOMi) the 2nd ProFuturo-Wayra Call for Entrepreneurs.
