American Tower and ProFuturo, the educational innovation program promoted by Fundación Telefónica Vivo and the “la Caixa” Foundation, are moving forward with the expansion of the Comunidades Digitales project in Brazil, with the delivery of technology equipment to public schools in Sergipe. The initiative will benefit more than 3,000 students and approximately 150 teachers in the country. The official ceremony, held today at the Sergipe State Department of Education (SEED), formalizes the delivery of 20 technology kits—each consisting of a laptop, a router, 30 tablets, and 30 headphones—of which 13 are destined for the state school system and 7 for municipal school systems, marking a strategic milestone in the consolidation of this partnership in Brazil.

The initiative is part of an international agreement signed in 2023, which has been expanding access to digital education in countries across Latin America and Africa. By 2025, the initiative had reached 97 schools, more than 36,000 students, and nearly 1,900 teachers in countries such as Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Kenya, and Nigeria. Beyond the delivery of equipment, the project is committed to an integrated approach that combines technology, teacher training, and ongoing pedagogical support.

In Brazil, the initiative addresses structural challenges in education, such as unequal access to technology, learning gaps—especially in mathematics—and the need to strengthen teacher training. In this context, the program focuses on the use of the Matemática ProFuturo platform, designed for elementary school students, with the goal of improving academic performance and developing digital skills.

Together with ProFuturo, we are working to strengthen learning and help reduce educational inequalities in the country,” says Lia Glaz, CEO of the Telefónica Vivo Foundation.

The implementation in Sergipe marks a milestone in the project’s expansion across the country, with the active participation of state and municipal school systems. “This initiative reinforces our school system’s innovation policy and expands learning opportunities for students by integrating technology in a structured way into everyday school life,” according to the Sergipe State Department of Education.

Since 2017, ProFuturo has been operating in the state, and this new phase consolidates progress toward a large-scale model, featuring ongoing teacher training and a more structured use of digital resources in the classroom. The program’s goal is to integrate technology into the curriculum on an ongoing basis, promoting pedagogical innovation and strengthening student learning.

One of the participating schools, the Poeta Garcia Rosa State School in Aracaju, exemplifies the initiative’s results. With approximately 356 students and a history of participation in the program dating back nine years, the school has expanded the use of technology in its daily operations.

Among the main advances observed are greater involvement of teachers in the use of digital resources, support from student assistants in handling the equipment, the use of data from the platform to personalize instruction, and the strengthening of the digital culture at the school.

The initiative also includes in-person and online training for educators, covering topics such as digital skills, the pedagogical use of technology, and artificial intelligence applied to education.

The collaboration between American Tower and ProFuturo began in 2023 with the initial goal of benefiting 44 schools. Since then, the partnership has expanded to nearly 100 institutions in different countries, incorporating new territories and strengthening initiatives such as impact assessment and educational monitoring. In Brazil, the project also has partner organizations responsible for local implementation, such as the Paramitas Institute in Sergipe and the Crescer Institute, which operates in other states.

In addition to delivering equipment, the project has been implementing measures to ensure the effective use of technology in the classroom, including technical support, instructional guidance, and ongoing monitoring of results. “Our goal is to support initiatives that expand access to technology and contribute to the sustainable development of communities. By enabling this infrastructure, we seek to create the conditions for educational projects like ProFuturo to achieve their maximum impact,” says Emerson Hugues, vice president and general manager of American Tower in Brazil.

The expansion of Comunidades Digitais is expected to help improve student performance, especially in mathematics, as well as strengthen essential 21st-century skills.
