“Education is a human right, a public asset and a collective responsibility” UNESCO, 2024.
Today, 24 January, marks International Education Day, a day to raise awareness of the right to education, enshrined in article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document sets out the fundamental principles that guarantee the inherent dignity and rights of all, serving as a key reference in the development of international human rights laws.
For this edition, the United Nations General Assembly has decided to highlight the role that education plays in achieving peace and development, under the theme “Learning for lasting peace”. According to UNESCO, in the face of a rising tide of violent conflict and an alarming increase in discrimination, racism, xenophobia and hate speech around the world, the urgency of an active commitment to peace is more evident than ever.
Education has a key role to play in this context, as underscored in the UNESCO Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development. Learning that benefits peace must be a transformative one, equipping students with essential knowledge, values, attitudes, skills and behaviours to become agents of peace in their communities and drivers of change.
ProFuturo’s educational innovation for peace and development
With the support of Telefónica Foundation and “la Caixa” Foundation, ProFuturo has been working since 2016 under the firm conviction that educational innovation with technology is the master key unlocking the transformation of the present and the future on a global scale.
Below, we share with you five essential keys we have to contribute to peace and development through education.
- The student takes an active role.
Every child has the right to an education that respects his or her pace and experiences. At ProFuturo we identify each educational level and contextualise students’ experience to their environment and country, in order to address and meet their needs in a meaningful way.
- Teachers are multipliers of change
Educators are the initiators who trigger of the learning process. We focus our efforts on training and coaching them, providing them with ongoing support to ensure they receive a positive and sustainable impact.
- Technology is our best ally
We personalise the educational experience to overcome geographic barriers and promote equal access through technology. We enhance pedagogical and digital skills and technological appropriation, contributing to equity in education.
- We plan for the pedagogical innovation
We introduce a culture of innovation to strengthen the foundations of inclusion, cooperation and sustainability in the educational process. Planning from the top is essential to fostering innovation.
- Our vision goes beyond the books
In our programmes, education goes beyond the mere transmission of knowledge; we also focus on soft skills such as values, attitudes, competencies and behaviours that are equally important. It is also at school where agents of peace for their communities are born.
Educational innovation through technology is unveiled as the key to learning for lasting peace. From its roots, education pursues the building of a peaceful society, laying the foundations for an egalitarian and inclusive world. Technology becomes a catalyst, breaking down borders and closing gaps, especially in vulnerable environments.
We work to bring educational innovation and technology to those in the most vulnerable and emergency environments who otherwise would not have access, committing to their inclusion in the digital reality and 21st century skills.
Making education a priority is to put people, equality, justice and sustainable development first, and ultimately peace.
