Today marked Telefónica’s International Volunteer Day, an event featuring dozens of activities at Distrito, the group’s headquarters in Madrid. At the same time, the Espacio Fundación Telefónica also organized several initiatives focused on digital inclusion and technology outreach.
ProFuturo was present at the social impact activity booth, as one of the organizations tasked with highlighting its use of technology. It did so with a workshop on computational thinking, led by several volunteers and aimed at 9-year-old children.
In the first part of the activity, participants drew on paper what their ideal marine environment would look like and then reflected as a team on pollution in such environments. Then it was time to use the OctoStudio app, a tool that allowed them to create their own video game. Once designed, the challenge consists of cleaning the seabed by creating a system that deducts points when waste appears and adds points when it remains clean.
As a grand finale to the workshop, participants can try out the video games created by their peers to see and evaluate their application. In this way, they will test their functionality and, in a playful manner, become self-aware of the importance of being sustainable.

About OctoStudio
In 2018, ProFuturo began exploring the concept of computational thinking to develop an educational approach applicable to the contexts in which it operates. Within this framework, OctoStudio is a free programming app for mobile devices that enables the creation of projects through block-based programming.
The tool allows children and educators to expand their creative possibilities, even those in communities with limited internet access. This tool offers a wide range of opportunities to engage in creative activities through the use of digital technologies. Additionally, it stimulates imagination and creativity through interaction with the environment, incorporating images and sounds into projects.
