ProFuturo and American Tower are expanding their digital education initiative, benefiting more than 3,000 students in Brazil

The handover of technology kits in Sergipe marks a new phase in the Digital Communities project, which forms part of an initiative operating in seven countries.

American Tower and ProFuturo, the educational innovation programme promoted by Fundación Telefónica Vivo and the “la Caixa” Foundation, are making progress in expanding the Comunidades Digitales project in Brazil, with the delivery of technology equipment to state schools in Sergipe. The initiative will benefit more than 3,000 pupils and around 150 teachers across the country. The official ceremony, held today at the Sergipe State Department of Education (SEED), formalises the handover of 20 technology kits — each comprising a laptop, a router, 30 tablets and 30 pairs of headphones — of which 13 are destined for the state school network and 7 for the municipal networks, and marks a strategic milestone in the consolidation of the partnership in Brazil.

The initiative forms part of an international agreement signed in 2023, which has been expanding access to digital education in countries across Latin America and Africa. By 2025, the initiative had reached 97 schools, more than 36,000 pupils and nearly 1,900 teachers in countries such as Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Kenya and Nigeria. Beyond the provision of equipment, the project adopts an integrated approach that combines technology, teacher training and ongoing pedagogical support.

In Brazil, the initiative is tailored to the structural challenges facing education, such as inequality in access to technology, learning gaps – particularly in mathematics – and the need to strengthen teacher training. Against this backdrop, the programme focuses on the use of the Matemática ProFuturo platform, aimed at primary school pupils, with the aim of improving academic performance and developing digital skills.

“Our aim is to support educators and pupils with solutions that integrate technology and innovative methodologies, particularly in the teaching of mathematics. Together with ProFuturo, we are working to strengthen learning and help reduce educational inequalities in the country,” says Lia Glaz, Chief Executive of the Telefónica Vivo Foundation.

Sergipe: a standout example of implementation

The roll-out in Sergipe represents a milestone in the project’s expansion across the country, with the active participation of state and municipal education networks. “This initiative reinforces our network’s innovation policy and broadens learning opportunities for pupils by integrating technology in a structured way into everyday school life,” states the Sergipe State Department of Education.

ProFuturo has been operating in the state since 2017, and this new phase consolidates progress towards a large-scale model, with ongoing teacher training and a more structured use of digital resources in the classroom. The programme aims to integrate technology into the curriculum on an ongoing basis, promoting pedagogical innovation and strengthening student learning.
