With a common purpose, the UNESCO Regional Office of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC) and ProFuturo have joined forces to narrow the education gap in the region and establish strategies and lines of action to advance towards the fulfilment of Sustainable Development Goal 4 of the 2030 Agenda.

UNESCO and the ProFuturo Foundation have been working together on different projects since 2019. The joint work carried out to date encompasses positioning and political advocacy initiatives, the publication of studies and reports and specific implementation projects such as the one we’ve been developing over the past year to train teachers in 6 African countries.

We also form part of the Global Coalition for Education launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, in which different public and private agents come together to promote education for all.

In Latin America and the Caribbean we work with the UNESCO OREALC team, offering our experience in digital transformation through the Advisory Council of the SDG 4 Executive Committee, in addition to our local partnerships, such as those in Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Chile and Colombia.

The agreement reached by the two institutions will begin with a major event: the meeting of the SDG 4 Regional Steering Committee at the headquarters of the Centre of Regional Cooperation for Adult Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (CREFAL), to be held in the city of Pátzcuaro (Mexico) on 15th and 16th May.

At this meeting, on behalf of ProFuturo, the Director of the Telefónica Foundation Movistar Mexico took part in a round table, during which she highlighted, from ProFuturo’s perspective, the policies required to achieve the objectives of educational recovery and transformation, the strategies to be prioritised for the recovery of learning and the digital learning initiatives to leverage the educational recovery and the transformation of education.

The work of the SDG 4 Regional Steering Committee, made up of 11 member States, 9 regional organisations and the Executive Secretariat (run by UNESCO/OREALC), is currently focused on the efforts made to recover and transform education, in compliance with the ministerial mandate of the 3rd Regional Meeting of Ministers of Education of Latin America and the Caribbean held in Buenos Aires in May 2022.

The Committee also supports the countries in their fulfilling of the commitments established within the framework of the Transforming Education Summit (TES), held in September 2022 in New York to prioritise education and accelerate compliance with the goals of SDG 4 of the 2030 Agenda.

The purpose of this meeting in Mexico is to review the progress made by the regional educational cooperation and agree on the Committee’s Work Plan for the 2022-2025 period, which includes the holding of the next meeting of Ministers of Education to be held in the city of Santiago de Chile in the second half of the year.

The CREFAL and the ProFuturo Foundation contribute to the organisation of the SDG 4 Regional Steering Committee.
