ProFuturo and UNESCO work together towards SDG 4: quality education

ProFuturo and UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, have been collaborating for 4 years and developing various lines of work to achieve a common goal: to narrow the education gap and contribute to improving the quality of education, specifically within the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 4 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

UNESCO DAY is celebrated worldwide every 4 November to commemorate the creation of the international organisation in 1945. UNESCO, which stands for the United Nations was established to promote peace and international cooperation through education, science, culture and communication.

One of the most prominent aspects of UNESCO’s work is its fundamental role in promoting education globally. The organisation focuses on ensuring access to quality education for all people, regardless of their background, gender, culture or geographical location.

In this objective, ProFuturo plays a crucial role as a partner through various networks and working groups in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. The foundation aims to narrow the global education gap, through technology, for millions of children living in vulnerable environments and in emergency contexts where it has an impact. Its focus on developing digital skills for teachers and school principals, for students and their families, contributes directly to UNESCO’s efforts to improve the quality of education worldwide.

An alliance that transforms

The collaboration between ProFuturo and UNESCO has borne fruit over the years, marking a milestone in global educational transformation. ProFuturo has played a pivotal role in the Global Education Coalition (GEC), the Digital Transformation Collaborative (DTC) and the Teacher Task Force as a founding member, sitting on the steering committee and foundation pillar members, respectively. These collaborations have enabled the implementation of concrete actions that have a positive impact on education work globally.

ProFuturo has participated for several years, at UNESCO’s invitation, in high-level events and meetings in New York, together with recognised agencies and institutions, including UNICEF, ITU, Teach For All and UNESCO, in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals summit in 2020 and this year, 2023. These activities were carried out in the context of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and aimed to get an update on how to support efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal related to education and education quality.

We have been supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 since our inception: To ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. And this year we have placed special emphasis on the monitoring of SDG 4 with UNESCO’s Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC) through a collaboration agreement in 2023.

In 2023, ProFuturo is featured in the Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM) with recognition for our Global Framework of Competence for Education in the Digital Age and technology-assisted learning programmes implemented in countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa. And, in addition to recognising our programme in several areas, the cover photo of the GEM Report is a student from the ProFuturo Kanata T-Ykua school in Manaus, Brazil.
And in keeping with our commitment, this year we have contributed to the GEM by organising consultation events in Spain with a focus on Latin America and a session presenting the report’s findings at the Education, Technology and Innovation event: EnlightED.

In addition, in terms of educational innovation, we have collaborated and participated in initiatives and events such as World Teachers Day; the Transforming Education Summit; the Workshop “ChatGPT, perspectives and scope for education in Latin America and the Caribbean; and the Peace Meetings in Colombia with the Panel on the influence of digital technology and AI in education; among many other events and opportunities in which we have contributed our knowledge and experience on how to contribute to a better education at a global level.

The commitment of both organisations has been consistent over the years, and we will continue to work together to achieve ambitious educational goals and promote a more equal and educated world.
