The future of Artificial Intelligence in education in Latin America

Together with the OEI, we launched a report on the prospects for AI and education in Latin America. Would you like to relive the presentation meeting? Read on!

On 18 April we presented the report ‘The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Education in Latin America’, at an event organised by the OEI and ProFuturo at Casa de América (Madrid).

During the event, in addition to presenting the report ‘The future of Artificial Intelligence in education in Latin America’, the aim was to generate a space for debate on the state of perception of education and artificial intelligence in the region, with the participation of specialists in the field who analysed the impact of AI on education, productivity and its prospects in Ibero-America.

The meeting was divided into three blocks, after the opening of the event by Enrique Ojeda, Director of Casa América, Julio Albalad Gimeno, Director of the National Institute of Educational Technologies and Teacher Training (INTEF) of Spain, Mariano Jabonero, Secretary General of the OEI and Magdalena Brier, Director General of ProFuturo.

Analysis of Artificial Intelligence in Latin America

The first panel, moderated by Tamara Díaz, Director General of Education and Vocational Training of the OEI, focused on the analysis of Artificial Intelligence in the region. Enrique V. Iglesias, first Ibero-American Secretary General and former President of the IDB, Mariano Jabonero, Secretary General of the OEI, Carme Artigas, Secretary of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence, and Richard Benjamins, Chief AI & Data Strategist at Telefónica, reflected on and opened this first space for debate.

Impact of Artificial Intelligence in Education

The next block of the meeting, moderated by Javier González Casado, manager of the Innovation area of ProFuturo, served as a space for the presentation of the report developed by ProFuturo and the OEI The future of Artificial Intelligence in education in Latin America’. 

Axel Rivas, principal investigator of the study, Claudia Limón, education expert, María Espinet Alegre, head of the Education Department of the “La Caixa” Foundation and Juan David Rodríguez García, expert in Didactics on Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking for the Classroom, led this second conversation space.

Relationship between productivity and Artificial Intelligence

The event closed with a final panel moderated by Andrés Delich, Deputy Secretary General of the IEO, in which the relationship between productivity and Artificial Intelligence was analysed and debated.

Carlos Martínez Miguel, Global Director – IoT, Big Data & AI Solutions and Services, Telefónica, José Antonio Ardavin, Head of Division of the OECD, Alberto Arenas, Director of the Social Development Division of ECLAC and María Jimena Durán, Senior Executive CAF-Development Bank, concluded an event with numerous keys to understanding the current situation of AI in Latin America.
