Data and information abound in today’s globalised and digitised world. Data have become the new fuel, and any organisation that has the ability to collect, process and use them effectively will be able to not only make better decisions with a view to the future, but also focus its efforts on driving innovation and efficiency in its activity. Data carry even more weight in the field of education.
Bearing in mind the relevance of data as an essential pillar for assessing educational progress, it’s vital to set realistic targets and, above all, improve decision-making in the formulation of global educational policies. On 7th, 8th and 9th February, UNESCO held the first Conference on Education Data and Statistics in Paris, seeking to draw attention to the importance of these issues and address the current challenges facing the collection and analysis of educational data, pointing to quality education as a right and priority for children around the world.
ProFuturo’s aim is to contribute to the achievement of quality education, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 of the 2030 Agenda, which establishes the importance of “guaranteeing inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all”. We’re aligned with UNESCO’s purpose and we monitored the conference, which sought to create a new community of practices to coordinate and synchronise the entire education community and improve ways of working, in order to draw relevant conclusions and integrate our measurement methodologies into the emerging needs of the educational ecosystem.
Tools such as the AMPL (Assessment of Minimum Proficiency Level), which provides an efficient and cost-effective way of measuring the achievement of a single level of proficiency in reading and mathematics at a given level of the education cycle, and LASER, which reflects the status of the existing data by country in relation to key areas for educational progress, were presented as part of the global commitment to measuring education data to feed and enhance global education policies, while other countries and organisations were invited to contribute to collecting, processing and using the data to reinforce education around the world.

ProFuturo and data measurement: the SAT tool
As a foundation committed to educational innovation in vulnerable contexts in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, at ProFuturo we acknowledge the critical importance of data in our mission. In keeping with compliance with the SDGs, from the outset we’ve developed a global monitoring system that collects all the information generated at the schools in the countries we operate in.
As the context has so required, the system has been modified to meet the need to analyse the large amounts of data that ProFuturo is able to capture and process (250 million items per day) and a network of indicators that provide a much more comprehensive vision of each school, leading to the development of the current SAT (School Assessment and Transformation) tool that’s become the linchpin of the evaluation and planning of this key organisation for the promotion of digital education in vulnerable environments.
The tool is made up of key criteria and indicators collected online and offline to provide a detailed and nuanced overview of the educational reality at each ProFuturo institution, in order to offer “customised” solutions and action plans suited to local needs.

Reinforcing internal capacities to generate, systematise and use evidence to improve the impact and effectiveness of education programmes enables us to continue innovating so as to bring quality education to the children, teachers, households and school managements who need it most. In addition to contributing to the communities, we’re aligned with the global need to generate evidence to understand how to continue steering education towards overcoming the challenges of the 21st century.
ProFuturo is committed to transforming education through the revolutionary power of data!
