Dina Buchbinder: Playing to change the world

What is a global citizen? How is it taught? Are we preparing our children to be the citizens that today's society needs them to be? What challenges do teachers face in educating the new citizens of tomorrow? What skills and competencies should they learn to manage? This is what Dina Buchbinder, a woman who firmly believes that it is possible to change the world through education, and who has moved from words to deeds, is talking about.

What would have to happen in education so that all of us really see one another as we see ourselves? And respect each other and want to learn from others without having all these prejudices, all this racism…? This was the question Dina Buchbinder asked herself many times since childhood. This restlessness and her love for playing led her to believe that another kind of education was possible. And from there, to create Education for Sharing, an international organisation that promotes the formation of better citizens from childhood, through play: “Games that allow us to experience and enjoy what we learn and come to our own conclusions”.

Because there are other ways! “We don’t necessarily have to sit quietly in order to learn and receive information passively. We can also participate, move, have fun, play… can’t we? And we can generate a very meaningful relationship with our teachers, educators, families…” Dina, whose eyes sparkle when she talks about her project, tells us in this interview how she founded her project, what personal convictions led her to it and how, over the years, she has helped thousands of teachers and children to perceive themselves as agents of change. To feel that they can change the world. That they are able to carry out tangible, concrete projects in their communities.

Because “education is the most effective and powerful channel for making a truly meaningful transition towards reducing inequalities in the world”. An education that turns us, from a very young age, into global citizens, aware of the challenges posed by today’s world and society and interested in developing civic values to solve these challenges.
