New teaching competences in the age of digital education

What should be the role of teachers in 21st century education? Are they prepared to teach with technology? What competences and skills should they develop and how?

New teaching competences in the age of digital education

New digital skills for teachers feature in this observatory conversation with Lúcia Dellagnelo, PhD in Education and Human Development from Harvard University and President Director of the CIEB (Innovation Centre for Brazilian Education). And we are not going to make spoilers, but, in the end, Lùcia presents us with a powerful tool for teachers, which ProFuturo has adapted and adopted for your use, and which you should not miss.

“Technology has to emerge to transform pedagogy, to allow the teacher to play new roles, roles of mediator, to support the development and construction of knowledge of the students, instead of being a simple transmitter of content, a conveyor of information to the students”. The author of these words, Lúcia Dellagnelo, is a psychologist by training, but she soon realised that any process of human development involves understanding and proposing an education that favours it.

To develop this understanding, she immediately turned her studies towards education. Today, she directs the Innovation Centre for Brazilian Educationa non-profit association with the aim of supporting the formulation of public policies that promote the culture of innovation in public education in her country. Because, as she explains, “we have to think about education in terms of public policy; if we want to create a fairer and more caring society, it is very important that everyone in a society has access to these educational opportunities”.

In the ProFuturo Observatory we talked to her about education, technology and development; about “connected schools”; about what the role of teachers should be in this new education and what competences they should develop to become digital teachers; finally, we talked about how to measure and evaluate these competences in order to guide their professional development.
