On 20 November, in commemoration of World Children’s Day, ProFuturo, the digital education programme promoted by the Telefónica Foundation and the “la Caixa” Foundation, highlights the importance of children’s education and reaffirms its commitment to improving the quality of education for millions of children in vulnerable environments in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.
ProFuturo strives to achieve the goal of raising awareness about the importance of working for the well-being of children, promoted by UNICEF, our global inspiration for the development and future of children in vulnerable contexts around the world.
UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, is the United Nations agency that provides humanitarian and development assistance to children and mothers in developing countries. It was founded by the United Nations General Assembly to fight for the protection of children’s rights, to support the fulfilment of their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to develop to their full potential.
The celebration of World Children’s Day has its origins in the date on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. By dedicating a world day to children, we seek recognition of their rights, regardless of their origin or status. We also seek to raise awareness of the situation of the most disadvantaged children in order to call on everyone concerned to mobilise efforts and resources to improve their learning conditions. Finally, it seeks to celebrate progress and achievements in order to continue building the path towards a future in which all children have the opportunity to grow up in a safe, healthy and nurturing environment.
At ProFuturo, we know that educating transforms
The importance of quality education for children lies in the fact that education is a catalyst for individual and collective development in society, especially in the vulnerable and emergency contexts where we are present. ProFuturo, through quality digital education aims to:
- Empower children: by providing the necessary tools and conveying the essential knowledge to understand the world around them, we are cultivating the ability to make informed decisions, develop critical skills and promote personal autonomy. Moreover, education focuses not only on the acquisition of academic knowledge, but also on the development of social and emotional skills. Those who receive a quality education are better equipped to interact effectively with others, thus fostering social cohesion and mutual understanding.
- Narrow educational and digital divides: Providing equitable access to education ensures that all children, regardless of their socio-economic background, have the opportunity to develop to their full potential. Technology, in these cases, makes it possible to reduce geographic barriers and provide equal opportunities to the youngest children regardless of where they were born.
- Create a global learning community: having learners and teachers in different parts of the world who have access to memorable and transformative learning experiences and who can share this with others to go further and further.
Commitment to early childhood education must be steadfast
One of the fundamental principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is: “Right to life, survival and development: Every child has the right to live and to reach his or her full potential in life,” and development is where education plays a vital role as a key determinant of a child’s future.
Education is the basis of everything, because the progress of all nations depends on a country with a quality education system.
This anniversary gives us the opportunity to speak out on behalf of those who cannot. In line with Goal 4 of the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda (SDG 4), we aim to improve the education of millions of children through technology and digital skills. One of ProFuturo’s main objectives is to provide resources that allow equal access to education for children to prevent them from dropping out of school. There is clear evidence of the major impact of our intervention in the most vulnerable contexts to achieve one of the principles of the UNICEF convention.
Children are our future from any perspective one wants to look at it. We will remain committed to bringing quality digital education to as many places as possible, raising smiles, strengthening relationships and empowering children to build their future and the world they want to live in.
